Design

Extended Family Residences™ are designed to promote independence, build community and sustain a connection with nature.

Design sets the context for interactions among participants. Attention to environment promotes aging in place and a relationship based model of care while engaging the community.

Residential scale and home ambiance foster independence.

Extended Family Residences™ are designed to empower Residents to participate to the greatest extent of their ability.
Built to a residential scale, the household is fully accessible to its Residents, and looks, feels and smells like home.

  • • Residents optimize their cognitive resources in a familiar, consistent and routine environment.
  • • An open design and small scale allows Residents to function as independently as possible.
  • • A familiar environment encourages Residents to embrace the roles they held throughout their life.

Cul-de-sac layout builds community among residents, staff, and family.

The household consists of 12 resident suites laid out in four “cul-de-sacs” of three suites.

  • • Accessible, open, and pleasant common areas facilitate meaningful bonds among household members, staff and families.
  • • The cul-de-sac layout encourages Residents to act as neighbors, who look out for and support one another.

Residents enjoy a connection with nature

Extended Family Residences™ are designed to provide easy access to the extended environment of the local community and natural world. The natural setting transforms the campus into a resource that engages the participation of the greater community. From garden planting and tending, to seed sorting and packaging, many Resident interests are incorporated to sustain a sense of purpose and ownership.

  • • Elite Care communities incorporate organic gardening into the daily life of the residents.
  • • In-house planting areas, raised beds, and indoor garden activities make gardening available to all Residents.
  • • The environment connects the community. From gardening, to sustaining resources, preserving and restoring nature, the grounds are an inspiring and engaging site.
